Message If you've looked at a stock intercooler, which I'm sure you have. You'll see that it was designed to just do it's job at the least amount of company investment in it. In order for a turbocharged car to work more efficiently, intercoolers are required. There's more to it than just an intercooler. More so on the design and size in correlation to the CFM flow rate of the turbo or turbo's to the intercoolers core. Since your looking at Stillen, which in my opinion is the best out there as far as side mount replacements. Simply due to the fact that Stillen takes the best products out there and stamps their name on it and resale's it at a markup price. Stillen intercoolers are really Spearco Racing. If you know anything about them, then you know their a major name in the real racing world. That being said, you know their design is one of the best you can get. Yet, for stock turbo's, the gains will be the same with HKS and Greddy as well. Just don't want to match stock turbo's up to a bigger than needed intercooler, because the boost pressure will be affected. The smaller cfm turbo's are trying to keep the pressure up throughout the whole system. So if you dial in 16psi, you might get to 14.5, because they can't flow for the over size of the intercooler's core. This is in most case's for the FMIC cores.

As far as what sets stock intercoolers even farther back in their performance is that in most all case's, their factory stock and dated a year older than the car manufactures date. So in your case, you have the oldest factory intercoolers out there in a 1990tt model. It's safe to say I'm sure they need replacing ( depending on miles too ) than to still use them and up the cars boost. After years and years on the road, the cooling fins get coated with dirt, bugs and worst of all oil spray from other cars in front of you at times. Rocks dings are very common.

One of the safest ways to run a Z with stock turbo's and stock injector's is upgraded intercoolers. Or any upgraded pressurized system. The car runs naturally rich when your at Stg III anyway. But when you start to run more boost, you'll need to cool that charge as much as you can to help with detonation. Because you can't ( well you could ) run race gas daily, but not practical. But you ever notice how when you first start the car up and take it out. It seems to have more power, much quicker? That's because the motor itself is still cold and the induction of air aid's to this faster response. Once heat soak or normal operating temps are reached, the car just goes into driving mode with the need of extra effort to try and reach that what was once quick and nimble cold start response. Well, this is the aid and performance upgraded intercoolers provide.
